DeepStory: Video Story QA by Deep Embedded Memory Networks
Question-answering (QA) on video contents is a significant challenge for
achieving human-level intelligence as it involves both vision and language in
real-world settings. Here we demonstrate the possibility of an AI agent
performing video story QA by learning from a large amount of cartoon videos. We
develop a video-story learning model, i.e. Deep Embedded Memory Networks
(DEMN), to reconstruct stories from a joint scene-dialogue video stream using a
latent embedding space of observed data. The video stories are stored in a
long-term memory component. For a given question, an LSTM-based attention model
uses the long-term memory to recall the best question-story-answer triplet by
focusing on specific words containing key information. We trained the DEMN on a
novel QA dataset of children's cartoon video series, Pororo. The dataset
contains 16,066 scene-dialogue pairs of 20.5-hour videos, 27,328 fine-grained
sentences for scene description, and 8,913 story-related QA pairs. Our
experimental results show that the DEMN outperforms other QA models. This is
mainly due to 1) the reconstruction of video stories in a scene-dialogue
combined form that utilize the latent embedding and 2) attention. DEMN also

Improvement in the photoelectrochemical responses of PCBM/TiO2 electrode by electron irradiation
The photoelectrochemical (PEC) responses of electron-irradiated [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM)/TiO2 electrodes were evaluated in a PEC cell. By coating PCBM on TiO2 nanoparticle film, the light absorption of PCBM/TiO2 electrode has expanded to the visible light region and improved the PEC responses compared to bare TiO2 electrode. The PEC responses were further improved by irradiating an electron beam on PCBM/TiO2 electrodes. Compared to non-irradiated PCBM/TiO2 electrodes, electron irradiation increased the photocurrent density and the open-circuit potential of PEC cells by approximately 90% and approximately 36%, respectively at an optimum electron irradiation condition. The PEC responses are carefully evaluated correlating with the optical and electronic properties of electron-irradiated PCBM/TiO2 electrodes
Combined blockade of polo-like kinase and pan-RAF is effective against NRAS-mutant non-small cell lung cancer cells
NRAS mutation is rarely observed in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, and there are no approved treatments for NRAS-mutant NSCLC. Here, we evaluated the effect of pan-RAF inhibitors on human NRAS-mutant NSCLC cell lines and performed high-throughput screening using human kinome small interfering (si) RNA or CRISPR/Cas9 libraries to identify new targets for combination NSCLC treatment. Our results indicate that human NRAS-mutant NSCLC cells are moderately sensitive to pan-RAF inhibitors. High-throughput kinome screenings further showed that G2/M arrest, particularly following knockdown of polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1), can inhibit the growth of human NRAS-mutant NSCLC cells and those treated with the type II pan-RAF inhibitor LXH254. In addition, treatment with volasertib plus LXH254, resulting in dual blockade of PLK1 and pan-RAF, was found to be more effective than LXH254 monotherapy for inhibiting long-term cell viability, suggesting that this combination therapeutic strategy may lead to promising results in the clinic
A case of hemocholecyst associated with hemobilia following radiofrequency ablation therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is performed as an alternative to surgical resection for primary or secondary liver malignancies. Although RFA can be performed safely in most patients, early and late complications related to mechanical or thermal damage occur in 8-9.5% cases. Hemocholecyst, which refers to hemorrhage of the gallbladder, has been reported with primary gallbladder disease or as a secondary event associated with hemobilia. Hemobilia, defined as hemorrhage in the biliary tract and most commonly associated with accidental or iatrogenic trauma, is a rare complication of RFA. Here we report a case of hemocholecyst associated with hemobilia after RFA for hepatocellular carcinoma that was successfully managed by laparoscopic cholecystectomy
Interleukin-17 in Various Ocular Surface Inflammatory Diseases
Recently, the association of Th-17 cells or IL-17 with ocular inflammatory diseases such as uveitis, scleritis and dry eye syndrome was discovered. We assessed whether interleukin (IL)-17 was present in the tears of various ocular surface inflammatory diseases and the tear IL-17 concentrations were clinically correlated with various ocular surface inflammatory diseases. We measured concentrations of IL-17 in tears of normal subjects (n = 28) and patients (n = 141) with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), dry eye syndrome (DES), Sjögren syndrome (SS), Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), filamentary keratitis, and autoimmune keratitis associated with rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus. Clinical epitheliopathy scores were based on the surface area of corneal and conjunctival fluorescein staining. The mean concentrations of IL-17 in tears of patients with filamentary keratitis, GVHD, autoimmune keratitis, SS, DES, MGD, SJS were significantly higher in order than that in normal subjects. Tear IL-17 concentration was significantly correlated with clinical epitheilopathy scores in the patients with systemic inflammatory disease, while tear IL-17 was not correlated with clinical severity of the cornea and conjunctiva in the dry eye patients without any systemic inflammatory disease. Tear IL-17 is likely to correlate clinically with corneal disease severity only in the patients with systemic inflammatory disease
